Orange and Teal, Make It Stop!

Color’s acting up on me again. I went to Creative Cow to see if there was a solution to my dilemma. As usual, someone has a workaround because there’s a bug that Apple can’t seem to squash. In this case, “Send to Final Cut Pro” is resulting in a timeline with NONE of my grades in it. As I was milling about, I came across a link to a hilarious blog post from a colorist about the overuse of the Orange and Teal color palate.

He uses plenty of screen grabs from different movies, including both summer blockbusters like Transformers and current comedies like Hot Tub Time Machine, to drive his point home. Comparisons of Shia Labeouf to Jersey Shore douche bags are made. Even funnier, Stu Maschwitz, the original designer of the Magic Bullet Suite, comments on the blog post and spread the comedy around on his Twitter feed. Nice to know the guy has a sense of humor. It of course doesn’t help that Mr. Maschwitz’s personal creation, Magic Bullet Mojo, is making this look even easier to obtain. He has a how to on what he (and Magic Bullet Looks) calls the Blockbuster look.

Back on Creative Cow, forum posters argued that all trends come and go, and who cares what the director wants as long as there’s a paycheck at the end? Also on Creative Cow there was a link to a great article on Color Theory for Cinematographers

The summer blockbuster look…that’s what we’re going for on Happy Cow, right? :)
