I am now switched over to Ppr cs6 and I love it. Some little things to learn. But it is super fast and no need to render till the edit is done! That alone is worth the $. Also edits p2, xd cam, etc. native. Boom! Final cut now seems like a dinosaur, maybe because I was on fcp 6 waiting for a new upgrade? Haha

Thanks Tate. I think the big revelation with Premiere Pro and Avid (and FCPX) is that they're FASTER than Final Cut Pro 7. There aren't many features that are "new" compared to FCP7, like crappy iMovie-style wipes. With Premiere Pro and the Mercury Engine, transcoding is now a thing of the past for the editor. So now the editor can just edit and not get lost in all the technicalities that, at the end of the day, have nothing to do with the art of editing. These tools will push the art forward. Unfortunately, editing doesn't exist in a vacuum. You need an app to edit. The apps will constantly change.

The other point I was trying to make, which I think you got, is that if you wait until your client asks for you to edit on a particular platform, it's already too late. You just lost that sale and you're behind. If you do get the job, you'll be playing catch up as you try to learn a new tool while under deadline. If you learn all the tools before you're asked, then you will be ahead of the other editors that are bidding on the same job you are.

I understand the bottom line argument. But that's the amazing place we're at now. You can get Avid Symphony for only $999. That's normally a $5999 app and last year was much more expensive than that. Same with Smoke 2013. Now it's $3500 and it used to be $15k or so (not that you're in the market for Smoke, just using it as an example). Prices are plummeting, so the tools are both easier to obtain, and your clients may expect that you have all these tools because they are so inexpensive.

I think the freelancers out there, like myself are always cautious of their bottom line before jumping into a new editing software. As opposed to a reluctance for change. My current struggle with making the switch is that none of my clients are asking for me to switch. Just like any business, you probably won't make the change until it's effecting your profit. The key is to forecast that change so you never have to skip a beat. (I appreciate this article for that reason. thanks E!)
In the end, we all need to realize that editing is more than just the program that you're running. It's having the ability to tell the story and create feeling. I get really turned off when someone in conversation talks down to you if you're not on the most current app. Let's talk about editing theory and creating engaging content that speaks to a viewer. Not jibber jabber about a program that organizes our footage and allows us to use cool new wipes..... STAR WIPE !!!!!

Finished watching this film for the first time a few minutes ago. There is just too much to say about it. It's beautiful. It's outstanding. It's jaw droppingly gorgeous. The colour is fantastic. The editing is done to a T. The snowboarding itself is phenomenal. I can't explain how inspirational this film was to me! As someone that loves extreme sports as well as being a digital media student at university, seeing The Art of Flight just blew my mind (thankfully not literally!). Equally as surprised that this post had zero likes or comments.

I truly can't express my admiration for this film.

THANK YOU!

I couldn't agree more, especially with the B&W pics. It's just natural that we value things that are rarer. 100 pictures of my Grandma's entire life hold more value than the 100 pics I fired off of my niece last week. I believe one of the great things about digital photography is the immediate feedback that allows you to learn faster. There's never been a better time to take up SLR photography as the learning curve is much easier than it used to be. But at the same time you need to learn how to use the delete button.

I'm in a similar thought confliction: get rid of my dvds and blus in place of downloads.
But while I've done this for music and I don't miss it at all, I do like physical movies, and books. ebooks are just so clinical and emotionless.

The other problem come of remembering all these. I guess most don't store everything they consume/read/watch, so how do we look back and see what we've enjoyed? Amazon likes? Facebook likes/posts? Photos of items? I'm using ReadItLater to index recent stuff I've seen/read, but it's not ideal.

For my generation - or most alive today - I think physical items still hold value, especially in media senses; I've a collection of some 100 b&w photos of my family history, right back through the generations. These hold more value and are intensely more interesting and connecting on a human level than digital pics we take 1000s of each year now.

I feel sad for people who'll never hold a dvd/blu-ray etc, but perhaps they're luck they don't know any better.
